Dotty Bamblett (Wiradjuri, Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara and Dja Dja Wurrung)

Who are you and where do you come from?
My name is Dotty Bamblett, I am 32 years old. I am a Wiradjuri, Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara and Djadjawurung woman.

Tell us what growing up was like for you?
I grew up in a family of 7 kids, but always had Aunties, Uncles and cousins living with me. My family didn’t have a lot of money, but we knew how to survive. It was crazy hectic fun growing up with my seven brothers and sisters and we always had extra cousins at home, meal times were always crazy as well.

Who are the women that inspire you?
I am inspired by all Aboriginal women all mothers, all grandmothers and Aunts.

What does self-determination mean to you?
Self-determination is very important to me- without self-determination, I wouldn’t be where I am today! If you have strong self-determination you can change the cycle and lifestyle of the next generations.

What does NAIDOC Week mean to you?
NAIDOC Week means a time to reflect, celebrate and share our heritage, share our history and celebrate our culture and achievements.

Can you please tell us about the work you do in Community?
I am a Kinship Carer. I have 9 children. I have developed an Indigenous State Netball Program called Victorian Seven Sisters, which gives young Indigenous girls the opportunity to gain skills, and gain friendships while enjoying the game of netball. Our program also acts as a linkage for these girls to have the opportunity to be part of the elite national championships.

What future would you hope for young Aboriginal women?
I would hope that young Aboriginal women develop strong values and self determination to want to make change within their own lives now and in the future.
